Calculating Grades

Calculating Grades was created by normanremer
I have a question about calculating grades when assignments should have different weights. For instance, if Assignment 1 is 30 points, but Assignments 2 & 3 are each just 10 points, I would expect Assignment 1 to have more weight (essentially the calculated grade should be the sum of all points earned divided by total points possible). It looks like grades are calculated as percentage of each assignment, and those percentages are then averaged together (irrespective of point weight). There is a coefficient calculation option, but this requires setting the multiplier for each assignment (a tedious task, especially if assignments have unusual point values).

Is there something I am missing, here? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

--Norman

Hi norman,
You should use the editor called 'Calculation - addition' instead.
Once you select the columns, choose the option 'Percentage over total addition'
Find below a couple of images to further illustrate the configuration, in this example the first three columns have the same grade type from 0 to 100, but it work the same with different assignments.

Here the final result, note the Grade column with the number of points obtained

And here the configuration

If something is not clear enough, do let me know.

Dear Bert,

With iDoceo 3.5, the calculation options have changed somewhat (with "Simple Addition" vs. "Percentage over total addition" options). For some reason I can't seem to get my calculated columns to show as a percentage, and the "Add % suffix" option is no longer available.

Ever since the new version, I have had trouble adding weighted grading (calculating the overall grade using percentages of several sets of columns), so I used an older gradebook created before version 3.5 and edited it to serve my purposes...perhaps there is some strange compatibility issue? Or maybe I'm just completely thick, and I'm missing something.

Maybe these two issues are related somehow?

Thanks for your continued work on this valuable app.

Hello Norman,
Would you mind sending me a template to support@idoceo.net with your most recent configuration?
Let me know which tab and columns are you having trouble with.

I think a template without data, only columns, will do for now. From the current gradebook tap on Export > Share > Include all tabs and I'll give it a look as soon as possible.
