It would be useful to me to be able to just send an e-mail to the students who were absent on a certain date or to the students in the column who have a 0 for an assignment rather than to the whole class.

That will be an interesting feature.We'll try to add some condition on the e-mail function in our next major update so that you can automatically select the students you need to address to.
