TOPIC: Generating a course grade in Summary tab

Generating a course grade in Summary tab 1 month 3 weeks ago #10515

Hi there,

I created a gradebook with 5 different tabs; each tab is a separate assessment item (i.e. exams, homework, etc.). Each of those items are worth a certain number of points out of the total points students can earn for the class (700.)

I've created a 6th summary tab with linked columns for each of the 5 grade items to get an overall course grade. However, I'm having an issue with the course total for students who were excused from some assignments. For those students, their grade should be calculate out of a modified course total, not 700. For example, if a student was excused from a 100 point exam, their course total should be out of 600 points. How do I have this aspect reflected in the calculation of final grades?

And side note: I am leaving those assignments that are excused blank.

Thanks in advance!

Hello ldlemon4130,
If you re using the Total Points grading calculation it should skip empty cells automatically.
When you have a chance, attach a screenshot of that final grade calculation and I'll explain in more detail
I've seen your e-mail, if the forum is ok for you, I'll reply here.

The first image is a screenshot of my exams tab for one student. The student missed exam 3, so their total points for exams should read 355.25 and be out of 400 (not 500 points). 355.25/400 is 88.8% so I sort of see where the 88% is coming from. However, I have no idea where the 444.06 points is coming from.

The second image is a screenshot of my summary tab for that same student. The cells with each category total are linked. This student should have a total of 554.95 points (355.25 from exams, 130 from homework, 30 from reflections, 32.7 from participation, and 7 points extra credit) and their final grade should be calculated out of 600 points (not 700) since they were excused from exam 3. So their final grade should read 554.95/600 or 92.5%.

I'm probably overcomplicating this or missing something very obvious with these
calculations so I really appreciate the help!

I'd need to see a bit more detail on that configuration.
Let's focus on the red folder/category.
Is it configured as "Total points grading" calculation?
If it is, then from the display settings: Top right corner button, enable the 'Show grade types' option
to see the configuration of those exams.

I think it is configured as "Total points grading" calculation. I found the display settings and enabled 'Show grade types' and here's what it looks like now:

Ok, please do the following:

Double tap on the red folder header > Calculation and make sure it is configured as Total Points grading > Ok.
Double tap on each Exam, 1 through 5 and instead of Exam Scores in Grade Type, set the generic grade and set the Max score of each (100 I think you said but each could be different)

EDIT: I Just saw your screenshot, focus on Exam 1 through 5 then

Ok, I changed each exam to the generic grade with a max score of 100:

Here's a screenshot of the red folder header information:

It's set to total points grading.

Here's what the header looks like now:

Oh, I see what's wrong. The total points does not have to be 500.
Leave it at 100

It is showing the result out of 500. The score is 88% of 500 = 444.06
You should also increase the row height a bit. You will see the result as a fraction: Top right corner > Row height

So should each of my summary columns for each tab (category) be the total points grading calculation with the total points set to the amount of each assignment (not the entire category)?

The category calculation does it automatically.

You have to set the total points out of the score you'd like to see.
If you wish to see it as a percentage, set it to 100.

It will work with any kind of assignment. These assignments may have scores out of 100 or any other value and the result will be shown out of 100 or the value you decide, in your case, it was showing it out of 500

I see what you're saying but now my summary tab in my gradebook says my course total is out of 309 points. Not 600 points for this student and 700 points for everyone else.

ScreenShot2022-05-17at5.31.40PM.png

How do I create a summary tab that adds all points students have accumulated together and divides by the total number of points they attempted?

Hello,

I am Munay from iDoceo support and I will help you configure correctly your gradebook.

First of all, it is showing 309, because that is maximum points possible you have if you combine all those columns.

The red column is 100 points + the green column is 135 + blue column is 30 + purple column is 35 + Yellow column is 9 = 309 max total points

If you want to have 700 then you must make sure those columns add up to 700.

If you have any doubt about how to do this, then to assist you I will need two things:

1. The template of your class (most important)
2. A clear explanation plus images of how you want every part graded so I can recreate it and then show you how to do it.

To create a template of your class, go to Export ---> Share ---> Select Gradebook and Mark include all tabs ---> Share. I attach a picture for guidance.

The you can attach the template here or send it to the support email karla.idoceolabs @ gmail.com
